G HOUSE

G House is a renovation project with the intent to preserve the original exterior architectural features as much as possible, while completely revitalizing the home’s interior with an all-around airy feel. The interior of the house in its original state was too dark and lacked natural light. This was largely due to the complex interconnected configuration of the interior spaces and lack of proper openings. The bearing wall structure of the building made it difficult to remove some walls without compromising the structural integrity; however, the architect developed the remodeled home design so that some openings were strategically created in the walls in order to connect the spaces and open up the house’s interior.

Just from merely viewing images of this home’s interior, one can almost feel the cool sensation of walking across the expansive white tiled floors on a hot day. Glossy, bright white finishes give the home its identity of a refreshing space with a serene atmosphere, with ceramic tile flooring that reflects light around the interior spaces, replacing the once dark hardwood floors that condensed the home’s interior environment. Subtle steel handrails along circulation paths blend into the polished impression that the space emits.

Incorporating massive windows into the façade allow for an incredible sense of lightness in the space, as the abundance of natural light penetrates the house through its many apertures and bounces off the bright walls and floors.

The immense custom windows in the south side visually connect the living room to the backyard and the outdoor pool, and seemingly invite the idyllic scene into the home’s blank canvas. The decision to have builders use the custom-made tilting windows allows for increased control over the connectivity between the outdoor landscape and the living room, facilitating a seamless transition from interior to exterior space. The quality of this spatial organization is almost resort-like, as it offers tranquil scenery just steps away from central living space. The architect ensured that the roof structure was preserved from the first iteration of the home and is exemplified here and along the edges of the structure, revealing its unusual and unique profile. It is also quite noticeable in the main bathroom, where the roof pitch defines a cavern-like environment, which is enhanced by the raw materiality chosen for the bathroom’s finishes.

The spacious, modern kitchen is designed to feel incredibly clean and pure, with intriguing features like simplified black grout between the glossy bleached ceramic tiles and flooring. The second level of the house is equipped with an additional upper living space, which exhibits purity and brightness consistent with the rest of the home. The skylight above carries additional natural light down through the core of the house and illuminates the interior rooms.

Before construction for the renovation began, the backyard’s landscaping was a chaotic mixture of elements. Its updated design is minimalistic, with the yard divided into quadrants with distinctive characteristics - pool, gravel, grass and foliage - enabled purposeful use of space, and made this private space more of a destination for its users, rather than having it be an impersonal and arbitrary lot.

The prior Kenitex finish was a disservice to the original façade, as it diminished the elegance and simplicity of the home’s overall design. The architect had white cement finish applied over top to create a simplistic, smooth facade texture, with aluminum edgings applied to divide the façade into different surfaces, and give the cladding a more organized appearance. The combination of a custom black-tempered glass doors and a black brick wall created contrast between the property wall and the house, making each structural element stand out.
